Janis Blackschleger, March 13 & 20, 2013

The unique character and beauty of the lands, seas,
skyscapes and wildlife within North County Mayo
are in joyous evidence in the children’s artwork.

“Nature’s Calls – Dordán Dúlra” led in to the 2013 St Patrick’s Day celebrations, with an outdoor art exhibition consisting of artwork based on the theme of nature and the importance of their green and marine environments. Created in 2013 by pupils ages 5 to 13 of Ceathrú Thaidhg primary school in north west County Mayo.

Ar an 15ú Márta beidh taispeántas ealaíne lasmuigh ag léiriú ábhair ó dhaltaí Scoil Náisiúnta Cheathrú Thaidhg in iar-thuaisceart Mhaigh Eo ar an téama Dordán Dúlra agus tabhacht na timpeallachta. Le titim na hoíche beidh na híomhanna le feiceáil, lasta le soilse speisialta, ar scáileán ollmhór os comhar an lucht féachana i gclós na scoile. Ócáid speisialta atá ann don chlann uilig.

The outdoor art exhibition was projected using special lighting on an outdoor screen at nightfall. In keeping with the environmental theme and the celebration of Ireland's national feast day some of the public buildings in Ceathrú Thaidhg such as An Seanscoil (The Old School) were also lit up in green.

Lorna Siggins wrote of the project’s significance in The Irish Times and its aims to
“raise awareness of the Sruwaddaccon bay area and to challenge the public perception of ‘confrontation and high vis-jackets’ associated with the Corrib gas project nearby.”

Commentary during the show was provided by Seámus Ó Mongáin, with both pupils, their parents and members of the wider community attending. Photographer Amelia Stein, who worked with the community on the exhibition, paid tribute to the children for their enthusiasm and noted that the “seeds had been sown” for a greater awareness of the beauty of the landscape.” (Link to the full article above or HERE.)
